Chapter 12

Steve Stern was listening intently to background noises after Chubby threw the phone down – the revving diesel engine, the screaming tires, the sound fading as the truck roared to its demise - and tried to grasp what was happening. Then he heard the explosion; the blast startled him, hurting his ear. He jerked the phone away. Allen, Agaka, Magakis, and Wenta were looking at him. Steve spoke, “I think he’s…” Just then a low rumble rolled over the DPL complex traveling from east to west. Allen grabbed the direct line to the main gate.

“Guardhouse, it’s Allen. Do you see anything? Did you hear the?”

The guard cut him off when he answered, “Yes, sir. We saw something like a red flash over by Socorro, sir.”

“Okay, keep us posted down here. Watch that sky.”

Here we go again, Tom thought, prepared to die and then reprieved, only to face death again. The past week was a grinding emotional roller coaster. He couldn’t take much more. He felt on the verge of a mental breakdown. Just find a gun, maybe, and put it to his temple. He spoke, “Major, you know we are just waiting to die. I mean we are slowly being irradiated and these aliens are winding up to finish us off. We might as well give up. I mean…” Tom stopped in midsentence. A hand reached out touching his own, grasping tighter and tighter. It was Costas, slowly shaking his head no. Tom looked down at the floor as Costas released his grip. His arm reached around Tom’s shoulder. Costas softly spoke, “Never, my boy, … never give up.”

Stern picked the DARPA cell phone up muttering, “Goodbye, Chubby.” Wenta glanced up at the Major. He appeared dejected, slumping. There was no command personality here, right now he just a man wearing a blue uniform and just as alone as everybody else in a tiny isolated outpost known as Dynamic Propulsion Laboratories. Costas broke the empty silence, “My friends, we cannot give into these sons of bitches. Listen, we have this shelter below us and food to last a year or more. We all are still alive.” Major Allen sucked his stomach in as he drew a deep breath and lit another cigarette. “Who said anything about giving up, Professor?” He reached for the land line to the New Mexico National Guard at Santa Fe. Two rings later it was picked up.

“Hello DPL, Sergeant Wells here.”

“Major Allen, here. Look we just received information confirming that we have ten aliens on the ground west of San Antonio, off of Highway 380 at the Trinity Atomic Bomb Site. I understand you still have forty or so men stationed at San Antonio?”

”Yes, we do. How do you know all of this, sir? Air Force Intel? Say, the Colonel is here. He says we have no means of communication with the group, the deployed group at San Antonio, but they should still be there. Their last orders were to stay at the intersection of New Mexico 380 and I-25 and secure it.
